Looking to get Revision Rhinoplasty in Toronto?

Revision rhinoplasty in Toronto

If you underwent rhinoplasty and are dissatisfied with the results, revision rhinoplasty can help. This surgical procedure corrects problem areas resulting from your initial procedure, whether related to your appearance or nasal function.

Our Revision Rhinoplasty Surgeon, Dr. Solomon is an Otolaryngologist Head and Neck surgeon, practicing facial plastic surgery for over 20 years in the Greater Toronto Area, specializing in rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty.

Dr. Solomon understands the disappointment patients experience when their rhinoplasty procedure–commonly known as a nose job–does not produce the expected results and offers revision rhinoplasty to help achieve the appearance you envisioned.

What is revision rhinoplasty?

Also known as secondary rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty is intended to correct unwanted results or functional issues following past rhinoplasty procedures. Dr. Solomon is a trusted rhinoplasty surgeon in Toronto who uses his vast experience performing plastic surgery to perform this challenging procedure.

Once a nose has undergone surgery, a primary rhinoplasty, scar tissue can form, which can complicate a secondary surgery. Therefore, it takes an experienced revision rhinoplasty surgeon to navigate all the complications that can present in a revision rhinoplasty.

Dr. Solomon will review all risks and probable outcome in your one-on-one consultation at one of our private clinics in Toronto or Thornhill. This allows for you to discuss your concerns and examine your nose to determine the best approach to improve its appearance and function.

What imperfections does revision rhinoplasty address?

This is a very specific procedure that targets issues resulting from past surgery. As a result, Dr. Solomon must first determine the anatomical cause of both the cosmetic and functional outcomes to understand the best approach.

Common imperfections resolved through secondary rhinoplasty include:

  • Inclined nasal tip

  • Overly turned or sharpened nasal tip

  • Rounded nasal bridge

  • Minor dents and bumps around the bridge of the nose

  • Diminished nasal function

What are the benefits of revision rhinoplasty?

There are many benefits you can experience following revision rhinoplasty, including:

  • A more natural appearance

  • Improved facial symmetry

  • Improved nasal function and breathing

  • Increased confidence and self-esteem

  • Increased trust in medical professionals

  • Overcoming anxiety related to past surgery

Dr. Solomon can help achieve the look you envisioned while reducing any side effects impacting your breathing and nasal function. He will soften the look of your nose, creating gentler transitions while smoothing and diminishing the appearance of any “operated” appearance.

We are here to support you and find the best solutions to overcome the challenges you’ve experienced following your primary rhinoplasty surgery.

How To Achieve A Natural Looking Nose?

From a surgical perspective, a natural-looking nose has gentle transitions between each aesthetic sub-unit of the nose: the bridge, the tip, the alae, and the columella. The transitions should be soft and free from extreme angles or sharp lines. With some rhinoplasty procedures, the nose has been made to look unnatural with transitions between the different subunits that look artificial. Therefore the primary aim of rhinoplasty surgery is to create gentle transitions between sub-units and to take into account the patient’s goals, facial features and nasal characteristics.

What to Expect When Considering Revision Rhinoplasty

Before Dr. Solomon recommends any cosmetic surgical procedures, he first schedules a consultation at either our Toronto or Thornhill clinic. This allows him to discuss your personal goals and review your health history.

He will assess nasal function, using his knowledge of nasal airflow to determine the best approach to restore proper function. He will also address any limitations based on the condition of your nose, as well as your overall health.

If your health history does not present risks, Dr. Solomon provides an honest nasal appraisal to help establish realistic goals. For example, the texture and thickness of skin, facial proportions and contours and the amount of scar tissue from previous surgery will play an important role in determining what can be achieved. Advanced computer imaging can often assist with surgical planning for revision rhinoplasty.

In order to ensure you understand the procedure and are at ease with its proceedings, Dr. Solomon will:

  • Explain the revision rhinoplasty procedure so you can make an informed decision based on what is involved and the expected results.

  • Encourage you to share your concerns and any anxiety you might experience at the idea of undergoing another nose job surgery.

  • Show you before and after images of similar cases from patients who fly in from all over Canada for the surgery, so you feel more confident in his abilities.

  • Answer all of your questions and ensure you feel 100% comfortable with his recommendations.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Your revision rhinoplasty surgery is performed under local or general anesthesia. Preparations are made based on the type of anesthesia required to keep you comfortable during the procedure.

Because each case is unique, it is difficult to explain the basic steps involved. However, reconstruction of the underlying nasal structure may be required using cartilage grafts from your nose, ear, or rib.

Other corrective steps might require fascia from the scalp to cover imperfections on the nasal tip or bridge while cartilage grafts may also be required for reconstructive revisions such as your nasal tip.

In some cases, implant material such as Gore-Tex or Medpore may be considered, whether because natural tissue is unavailable or you do not wish to undergo surgical procedures to remove cartilage from your ear or rib. Reconstruction and reshaping the framework of bone and cartilage and re-draping of the skin are typical requirements for revision rhinoplasty.

What to Expect Post-Procedure

Following your revision rhinoplasty surgery, you will need someone to pick you up to ensure your safety. Depending on the patient and the extent of the surgery, Dr. Solomon may use traditional or dissolvable stitches/sutures or both. If traditional stitches are used, Dr. Solomon or one of his Registered Nurses will arrange an appointment at a suitable time to remove them.

Because secondary surgeries are far more personalized, Dr. Solomon will review post-procedure expectations regarding bandages, bruising, swelling, bleeding, etc. and how to relieve symptoms based on those expectations.

Managing Possible Side Effects Post-Surgery

The potential for rejection or infection is one of the possible issues with grafts and implants.  Dr. Solomon will discuss the risks based on the procedure. Harvesting a rib for a cartilage graft can be uncomfortable; patients may be unwilling to accept a chest incision, and the graft may shrink or bend with time. A cadaveric rib graft can be an alternative option for some patients who don’t want to use their own rib cartilage.

All of the specific and possible side effects will be reviewed with you both at your consultation so you can decide whether you are comfortable with the risks, as well as prior to surgery, so you understand what to expect.

Is the procedure safe?

Although rhinoplasty is considered a safe procedure, revision rhinoplasty is often less routine than the primary surgery. As a result, it might present unique risks. As mentioned, Dr. Solomon does a thorough consultation, assessment, and medical history review, to establish whether secondary rhinoplasty is advisable.

Other factors are involved, such as grafting and potential rejection of grafts and implants. Dr. Solomon believes in complete transparency and honest assessments to ensure all possibilities are addressed and risks specific to your surgery are discussed in full detail.

As a top Rhinoplasty Surgeon in Toronto, his experience performing thousands of these nose job procedures ensures he has the requisite experience and skills necessary for the complexities of Revision Rhinoplasty, reducing your risks and improving positive outcomes.
