What is a Deep Plane Facelift?

A deep plane facelift, performed in Toronto by Dr. Philip Solomon, is a transformative cosmetic surgery and is considered the gold standard for facial rejuvenation for the aging face. The primary role of a facelift is to improve the mid-face cheek position, sculpt and sharpen the jawline, soften nasolabial folds, improve the contour of the neck, as well as reducing the appearance of the platysmal bands.

There has been an evolution in facelift surgery in the last 20 years and under the expertise of Dr. Solomon, a deep plane facelift in Toronto can bring back your facial vitality with natural, long-lasting results, giving you a refreshed and youthful appearance.

What Makes a Deep Plane Facelift Different?

The deep plane facelift was first developed in 1990 and has been modified and improved upon in the last few decades. Dr. Solomon was fortunate to learn from some of the pioneers of the procedure and has adopted this technique as his choice procedure for the majority of his facelift cases.

A deep plane facelift performed by Dr. Philip Solomon is a transformative cosmetic surgery procedure. Unlike conventional facelifts or older techniques, deep plane facelift technique has a few main differences:

  • The deep plane facelift completely releases the deep attachments of the face allowing for a more effective repositioning of the deeper structures. Alternative facelift techniques on the other hand have intrinsic limitations where the deeper facial structures are held down by ligaments.
  • The deep plane facelift uses a vertical direction of lift. This is an anti-gravity direction, compared to historical facelifts that pulled posteriorly and horizontally, giving a “wind-swept” or over-pulled look.
  • The deep plane facelift technique not only removes excess skin, but also lifts the SMAS layer restoring your appearance to what it was 10-20 years ago.
  • With the deep plane facelift, there is less tension on the skin flap, avoiding the unnatural, tight appearance that can occur with other facelifts. Therefore, patients will typically heal more favourably as compared to alternative facelift techniques where tension on the skin can result in unfavourable and wide scars.
  • The deep plane facelift technique is unique as it is carried out in a deeper layer involving skin and SMAS (the fibrous muscular layer) as a single thick robust flap. Alternative techniques such as SMAS lift, lift the skin and muscular layer separately, which can increase swelling and lengthen recovery.

Who is a Deep Plane Facelift Candidate?

Anyone who is experiencing signs of aging such as volume loss, sagging skin, lack of jawline definition, jowl formation and lax platysmal bands could be candidates for deep plane facelift. Other candidates may include younger patients seeking a more heart shaped face, who may choose a deep plane facelift to lift the underlying structure.

Suitable candidates for this advanced procedure generally include individuals who:

  • Range in age from 40 – 75: While the procedure is highly effective for individuals within this age range, it has become most common amongst those in their 50’s. Patients in their 40’s who are experiencing early signs of aging in the mid-face and along the jawline, may consider a mini facelift, also known as a short scar facelift, an ideal procedure for a slightly younger demographic.
  • Experiencing mid and lower face aging: This technique is ideal for those with mild, moderate to significant facial sagging in the mid/lower face and neck.
  • With severe neck aging: Candidates who will benefit the most often have marked skin laxity in the neck area, where a deep plane facelift can restore a youthful contour to the jawline and neck.
  • Have volume loss and deep folds: Those with pronounced facial folds find this procedure offers substantial improvements. This procedure will provide structural correction by repositioning tissues that less invasive procedures cannot achieve.
  • Are non-smokers: Non-smokers with healthy lifestyle habits are the best candidates, as these factors significantly contribute to better healing and the durability of the facelift results.
  • Are sun avoidant: Best results are achieved when patients are committed to avoiding the sun and additional procedures to reverse sun damage such as laser resurfacing.

The Cost of a Deep Plane Facelift

Choosing to undergo a deep plane facelift is an investment in your appearance and confidence. The procedure offers a dramatic improvement in combating age-related changes. The value of a facelift procedure is felt by many to be an excellent investment in anti-aging. Many non-invasive procedures can become expensive over time and provide limited results. The restorative surgery of a deep plane facelift will reverse the signs of aging and take you back to a younger version of yourself, whereas non-surgical alternatives may camouflage some of the signs of aging but change your appearance.

Factors Influencing Facelift Price

This procedure is among the most comprehensive and effective facelift techniques, aimed at providing significant and natural-looking results. The pricing can vary depending on several critical factors:

  • Complexity and customization: Each deep plane facelift is tailored specifically to your unique facial structure and aesthetic goals. The work required varies amongst patients and can influence the overall facelift cost.
  • Combination with other procedures: For those looking to achieve a more extensive transformation, combining a deep plane facelift with a brow lift, blepharoplasty, facial fat grafting or laser resurfacing may be advisable. At Solomon Facial Plastic, we offer savings when combining procedures.
  • Surgeon’s expertise: Dr. Philip Solomon, is a leader in the field of Facial Cosmetic Plastic Surgery and specializes in the deep plane facelift surgical technique in Toronto, Canada. With over two decades of experience performing hundreds of facelift procedures with very successful outcomes, he has an extensive library of before and after photos that he can share with potential patients cataloguing his experience and expertise.
  • Canada vs. United States: Dr. Solomon takes into consideration the expense of facial plastic surgery and tries to keep his fees affordable for his Canadian patients. The equivalent deep plane facelift procedure in the United States can be in excess of $100,000 USD. Dr. Solomon’s surgery provides comparable outcomes to his colleagues in the U.S. who also perform deep plane facelift surgery.

Investing in a deep plane facelift in Toronto is an opportunity to enter the next chapter of life feeling youthful and rejuvenated.

Other Facelift Options – Dependant on Age and Anatomy

SMAS Facelift

Dr. Solomon also performs the SMAS Facelift to target the SMAS (superficial facial muscle) layer of the skin to tighten and support the muscles of the lower face. Good results can be achieved with either Deep Plane Facelift or SMAS Facelift techniques.

Mini Facelift

A mini facelift also known as a short scar face lift is suitable for a younger patient with early signs of aging along the jawline and mid face. When Dr. Solomon performs a mini facelift he will still utilize the deep plane approach to address the underlying tissues. It is more affordable but limited to younger patients.

MACS-Lift

The MACS-Lift option is short for “minimal-access cranial suspension”. It is a more minimalist facelift that focuses on addressing sagging skin in the mid-face, jawline and neck regions. This type of facelift can be good for people who are experiencing very early signs of aging along the mid face and jawline. While Dr. Solomon has performed this in the past, he will typically recommend a deep plane or mini facelift as he believes the results are superior.

Necklift

A neck lift is an isolated procedure that only addresses the neck. At Solomon Facial Plastic we offer a few options to improve neck contour including a combination of a submentalplasty with neck liposuction, a direct neck z-plasty (most suited for elderly male patients) or an isolated lateral neck lift, which may be suitable in the case of a younger patient who may have experienced massive weight loss.

In most cases with our female patients, a neck lift is best combined with a facelift to properly address the mid-face, lower-face and neck as one. This approach provides the most natural result for facial rejuvenation.

Deep Plane Facelift

Dr. Philip Solomon is a renowned Toronto Facelift Surgeon known for his incredibly natural facelift results. The Deep Plane Facelift is an advanced surgical technique that repositions the deeper structures of the face to where they were 20 years prior. Dr. Solomon adopted this technique into his practice 10 years ago providing patients with longer lasting results that look so natural that a surgical intervention would be visibly undetectable.

Deep Plane Facelift vs Conventional Facelift

The Conventional Facelift only addresses the deeper layers of the face with sutures that tighten the face horizontally towards the ears which can often make a face look over-tightened or wind swept. The Deep Plane Facelift technique lifts the face vertically for a more natural and smoother appearance. The Deep Plane technique elevates those deep layers and repositions them for a restored appearance that will provide longer-lasting results.

Deep Plane Facelift Combined with Multiple Surgeries

Results from your Deep Plane Facelift can often be enhanced with other smaller surgeries such as Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery), Facial Fat Grafting, Chin Implant, Brow Lift or Laser Resurfacing. Dr. Solomon takes an holistic approach to creating a treatment plan for your individual needs. In combining a variety of procedures Dr. Solomon can achieve a more natural, more youthful and exceptional outcome.

Anesthesia for a Deep Plane Facelift

Toronto Facelift Surgeon Dr. Solomon, affords our patients the opportunity to have their Deep Plane Facelift Surgery under general anesthesia or IV sedation. We ensure our patients are kept comfortable throughout their surgical procedure.

The Aging Face

Signs of aging can start in your 30’s however it’s as early as 25 years of age when we start producing less collagen, as much 1% each year. This results in less facial volume, thinning skin and skin laxity. The liquid facelift can often be the first option before opting for Facelift Surgery. Once skin laxity increases and becomes more visible, a Deep Plane Facelift may become the best approach for treatment.
The Deep Plane Facelift is ideal for candidates, both men and women, in their 40’s to their 70’s.

Liquid Facelift

Often the first step towards cosmetic enhancement begins with botox and dermal fillers that can help relax facial muscles and add volume to areas of the face such as the tear troughs, cheeks and nasolabial, referred to as a “Liquid Facelift” or “Non-Surgical Facelift”. Following your Deep Plane Facelift surgery, Dr. Philip Solomon often recommends a revised injectable treatment plan to further enhance your surgical results to achieve a very natural, youthful and refreshed appearance.

Skin Health

Now that you have invested both your time and money into your Deep Plane Facelift Surgery, taking care of your skin is imperative to maintain a youthful and refreshed appearance. Medical grade skin care products strengthen, hydrate and improve the overall texture and tone of your skin. In maintaining your skin health, you help with cellular turn over and collagen production, both of which will help you look and feel more youthful.

  • What's the difference between a Deep Plane Face-lift and a Conventional Face-lift?

With the Deep Plane Face-lift the results are more natural, last longer and are more comprehensive. We are repositioning in the deepest layer above the muscle layer of the face and above the facial nerve and all overlying tissue to the position that it started at. Whereas, with Conventional Face-lifts you are repositioning some of the deeper layers and then you are tightening the overlying skin. Sometimes it can look a little less restorative than the Deep Plane Face-lift results.

  • Am I a candidate for a Face-lift procedure or filler?

We offer both procedures at our clinic and provide a very honest assessment of which option we feel will best help you achieve your goals. Facial fillers are a popular anti-aging treatment used by millions worldwide to help restore volume in the face.. Facial fillers help enhance areas like the jawline, cheeks, and lips, giving you a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Whereas, a surgical facelift doesn’t change your face but restores the appearance of your face by lifting the cheeks, jawline, and neck, helping you look years younger.

  • How much does a Face-lift cost?

Here at our clinic we try to keep our costs competitive. Facelifts are complex procedures, where we are performing a deep plane facelift, which is more comprehensive than a skin-only facelift. Our fees for 2024 start at around $30,000, covering the lower face, jaw, and midface. In some cases, additional procedures may be necessary, which would add to the cost. When compared to U.S. cities, where facelifts can cost up to $100,000, our pricing remains highly competitive.

  • Should I undergo a Face-lift or Neck-lift?

This answer really depends on the individual case. In general terms, a Face-lift and Neck-lift are really one procedure. Their anatomy is connected at the jawline, so we view the face as everything above the jaw and we think of the neck as everything below the jaw down to the clavicle. Since the tissues are connected, the platysma muscle in the neck extends over the jaw and forms the SMAS layer in the face. Some patients believe they can undergo a neck lift without a facelift, but aging in the neck is often accompanied by drooping jowls, which is why both procedures are typically performed together or considered as one procedure.

  • What is the ideal age to undergo a Face-lift?

The most common age that we are performing Face-lifts on is women in their early to mid-fifties. This is largely because today younger patients are embracing cosmetic procedures to maintain a youthful, refreshed appearance. With modern techniques like the deep plane facelift, someone in their fifties can look as though they are in their forties. Additionally, menopause often brings noticeable changes to the skin’s texture, face and appearance, making this a common time for women to seek out this type of surgery.

  • Should I lose weight before I undergo a Face-lift procedure?

In general, we would like patients to be at their ideal body weight. Give or take, within 10 pounds. If a patient is planning to lose significant weight loss we typically inform them to lose the weight before undergoing a Face-lift with us. First reason being, health reasons and secondly, things will change in the neck and face anatomy with a 20 pound weight loss. We are seeing patients who have lost a lot of weight from drugs such as Ozempic. With this much weight loss it can cause a drop and deflation in the face. So waiting after you have lost your weight would be better before we perform this type of surgery.

  • What makes a "natural looking result" for a Face-lift?

Ideally we want all patients to look refreshed instead of operated on. Certain things can be done to avoid you looking operated on. One is the technique being used and the other is the incision and scares. We want the scars to be as imperceptibe as possible which has a lot to do with scar design. We try to hug the scars as close to the ear and inside the ear as possible and up into the hairline. We do special surgical techniques such as laser resurfacing to improve the results. Face-lift surgery should look natural and should be restoring your old look and not changing your look. We don’t want you looking pulled or too tight or looking artificial. We believe in a vertical lift which repositions your face in an antigravitational lift rather than a posterior pulled face that looks tight and unnatural.

  • What Procedures Are Best To Do With Facelift Surgery?

Facelift surgery alone can take years off the face and it’s quite common to combine facelift surgery with additional procedures to further enhance results. Brow lifts, laser resurfacing, blepharoplasty, lip lift, and fat grafting are the most common surgeries performed with facelift surgery. The goal of facial rejuvenation surgery is for the patient to look refreshed not different, much like they did a decade prior. As gravity affects the entire face, addressing the brows, eyes, lips and cheeks with a lower facelift is the best way to achieve a complete rejuvenation.

  • How Long Do Facelift Results Last?

We tell our patients that facelift surgery turns back the clock. Patients can look 10-20 years younger with facelift surgery. Lifestyle, environment, and genetics all play a role in the aging process. We recommend our facelift patients use medical-grade skin care, and energy devices such as Morpheus8 and Laser Resurfacing to help maintain their youthful appearance.

  • What is a Deep Plane Facelift?

A deep plane facelift is a more advanced surgical technique that only a small population of surgeons perform. This technique requires the releasing of ligaments that anchor the connective tissue and muscle and; it also involves surgery just above the musculature and nerves of the face which is what makes this procedure more advanced.

The deep plane facelift is Dr. Solomon’s preferred technique as he feels it delivers a more dramatic repositioning of the neck and face as well as longer lasting and more natural results. Dr. Solomon has been performing facelift surgery for over 2 decades and has used all facelift techniques including the extended SMAS lift. Dr. Solomon believes that while the other techniques can yield good results, he feels the results of the deep plane lift are superior.

  • What is the recovery for a Deep Plane Facelift?

Recovery from the deep plane facelift can often be easier and quicker than the conventional facelift. Patients typically require 2-3 weeks recovery before returning to work however recovery time can vary from patient to patient. Typically patients wear a compression garment and surgical drains in in the first few days following a deep plane facelift. Sutures are commonly removed 7-10 days following facelift surgery. Residual swelling can linger for a few weeks with final results taking 3-6 months. We often tell patients they can typically be street ready 4 weeks following a deep plane facelift.

  • What is the best age to do a Deep Plane Facelift?

The demographic typically seeking a deep plane facelift ranges from mid to late 40’s to mid 60’s with the current sweet spot ranging in age from 53 – 58. More people are choosing to age gracefully without out the yo-yo effect, looking older than returning to a more youthful appearance. Our patients often want to address early signs of aging so they can looking as youthful as they feel through their 50’s and 60’s. What age to do a facelift is a personal choice however younger patients can often experience an easier and quicker recovery due to their age.

  • What is the cost of a Deep Plane Facelift?

The cost of a deep plane facelift can range depending on many factors such as the surgeon’s experience, the location of the surgery and the patients’ anatomy. On average, a facelift in Canada can range from $20,000 to $50,000. The cost of a deep plane facelift in the United States can range from $20,000 -$250 with imaging,000.
