Many patients considering chin augmentation surgery see their facial features as disproportionate, too rounded, or small. Many regard their appearance as having a “chubby look” despite their average weight.
Additionally, people may be unsatisfied with their facial profile, wherein a weak chin appears like a double chin, or their receding face looks smaller at the bottom and more prominent at the top.
Patients who proceed with chin augmentation experience an increase in self-esteem and confidence. They feel more content with their appearance, and this newfound confidence radiates outward.
When should you consider chin augmentation?
Chin augmentation surgery aims to rejuvenate/reconstruct facial contours or improve facial proportions. This procedure should be considered if you:
- Have a receding, weak chin and want more definition in your jawline.
- Desire to enhance a neckline, specifically if it looks aged or contains sagging skin from weight loss.
- Want to restore contour and proportion to your face.
- Would like to fix facial injuries, deformities, and asymmetry.
Am I a good candidate?
The following scenarios may indicate that you could be a good candidate for chin augmentation:
- Desire restoring facial proportions and facial contours from the signs of aging.
- Want to fix a weak jawline that doesn’t compliment your face, or in situations where you cannot distinguish the neck from other features.
- Repairing facial deformities/congenital conditions.
- Want to improve your profile by advancing the proportions of a weak chin.
If you are in good health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations about the surgery and outcome, you have an excellent chance of being a good candidate for chin augmentation treatment.
However, if your cosmetic surgeon determines you are not a suitable candidate, they can inform you about alternative procedures that may benefit your situation.
Understanding the Procedure
During your initial consultation, your surgeon will examine your general health and discuss your reasons for getting chin augmentation surgery. They will outline what to expect at each stage of the procedure and determine if you are a good candidate. If you have any concerns that are not addressed, then please feel free to ask your surgeon at any time.
Chin augmentation surgery takes about 30–45 minutes using general anesthesia, but local anesthesia can also be provided. A small incision is made under the chin for silicone chin implants, which are placed directly on the bone.
Our surgeons prefer this method because it allows for a more accurate placement while reducing the chance of infection. Both silicone and medpor chin implants can be used with silicone being most popular. Silicone implants are fitted into a small pocket in front of the mandible, affixed securely for decades and should not require replacing. Medpor implants are screwed into the mandible and are a more permanent fixture thus removing it would be far more complex, should the patient requested to do so.

What are the benefits?
Proportionate implants can improve facial symmetry. The primary objective of chin augmentations is to provide the patient with further chin projection in weaker areas and vertical height and lateral width if necessary. Correctly sized chins offer a more balanced facial structure.
Generally, both sexes have different objectives regarding cosmetic procedures. Men are inclined to desire a more defined, stronger jawline with chiselled chins. Conversely, women want softer features equated to a feminine look.
The surgical results depend on your facial features, structure, and how much can be manipulated or contoured.
For Men
Men often grow a beard or goatee to conceal a weak chin or due to dissatisfaction with their jawline. However, male chin augmentation surgery can eliminate the desire to cover the chin indefinitely. Implants come in many sizes, and Dr. Solomon can direct you to an option that is perfect for your face.
Once we complete the surgery, most men leave with a more well-defined, chiselled jawline. The result is a more proportional, masculine appearance to the face, which is more aesthetically pleasing.
For Women
Some women are concerned that their faces appear too masculine. Our experts can select an appropriate chin implant to restore facial harmony and balance. Women may also want to soften their visage a bit, which can be accomplished by injecting their body’s fat into their chin to alter the shape.
Both Genders
Male and female chin augmentation is the best method to correct a double chin by manipulating or extracting fat cells in the lower portion of the face. Patients don’t have to be overweight for their face and/or neck to store excess fat cells in the chin. Sometimes, a genetic makeup is responsible for a double or weak chin.
When a person genetically inherits a small jawline and chin, it causes a profile, making it appear as if the person’s chin recedes into their neck. Therefore, when photographed, even the smallest amount of fat can seem like another fold, crease, or double chin.
Fortunately, chin augmentations quickly and permanently correct this issue by adding facial proportion and balancing the rest of the face.
Are there any risks?
While chin augmentation and implants are standard procedures and considered safe, there is a risk of infection when incisions are made in the mouth instead of below the chin.
Your mouth contains bacteria that rubbing alcohol cannot remove in the same way as the skin. Therefore, Dr. Solomon prefers to create incisions under the chin to avoid infection.
