Dr. Philip Solomon was again in Fashion Magazine as one of Canada’s top cosmetic Facial Surgeons. This is the fifth year Dr. Solomon appear in the list of Top Cosmetic Plastic Surgeons in Canada.
Trends in cosmetic facial surgery – Facial Fat Transfer
Since the design of a new drug treatment that destroys fat cells under the chin in an effort to erase double chins, approximately one year ago, doctors now say that the hottest trend in cosmetic surgery is the addition of fat to specific parts of the body, such as the face.
The loss of volume in the face is a natural part of the aging process. Combining a face lift with the addition of a little fat, or performing the latter on its own, is going to be a popular procedure.
The mystery of fat grafting
The process of fat grafting, also referred to as volumetric restoration, is still much of a mystery to many. Physicians are only beginning to figure out the science behind the process. During the procedure, some fat is taken from the patient’s body – usually the abdomen – and injected into targeted sites on the face, through a minimally invasive procedure.
According to the ongoing research, adding fat grafts causes elastic fibres under the skin to reorganize, causing the patient to appear more youthful. Fat transfer is usually effective in specific areas of the face, including forehead, wrinkles, lines between the mouth and nose, crow’s feet, as well as cheeks, lips, and chins.
Why surgeons are switching to fat grafting
In mid last year, a survey by New York University of over 300 plastic surgeons, like Dr. Solomon, revealed that most had started using fat grafting to not only erase wrinkles, but also stop skin from sagging.
85 percent of the facial cosmetic surgeons in the survey use fat grafting to enhance the results of other facelift procedures. Most of them aim at smoothing wrinkles and creases, as well as eliminating sagging. Actually, plastic surgeons across the globe are quickly adopting the technique as standard in facelift procedures.
The reason is because fat grafting is the only technique of extensive use that can effectively counter volume deflation (loss of fat) in the face over time, today. Sagging, creasing, and wrinkling can be temporary treated with a variety of techniques, including synthetic fillers and Botox, but these methods cannot, by themselves, restore the plump, youthful quality of a face like a combination of fat grafting with facelifting.
The results for fat grafting have improved significantly in the past decade, owing to a deeper understanding of the anatomy of the face and fat compartments. Refinements in the technique have transformed the once unpredictable and inconsistent outcomes to more consistent and longer-lasting results with hardly any reports of complications.
