Facial Plastic Surgery: Primary Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult operations in facial plastic surgery . The operation is difficult because every nose is different and the anatomy varies from patient to patient. As the anatomy varies so must the techniques used for correction. The surgeon must be able to perform a precise and complete nasal analysis to spot all of the aesthetic and functional deformities.
Then the surgeon must formulate a surgical plan that is conceived to correct the specific deformities. It takes a great deal of experience to accomplish these steps.

Facial Plastic Surgeon: Rhinoplasty

A plastic surgeon who specializes in rhinoplasty will encounter many different combinations of anatomy and is better able to effectively correct the problems at hand. More common problems such as a bulbous nasal tip and a small dorsal hump are less complicated to correct than the previously operated and severely over-resected nose. However, even the less complicated nasal surgeries require attention to detail and precision in execution.

Assessment for Rhinoplasty

Dr Solomon strives in every rhinoplasty surgery to individualize his treatment plan. The key to a happy patient and a good outcome in rhinoplasty surgery is good planning. Dr Solomon will meet with each and every patient in consultation first to assess their nose. The desires of the individual will be taken into account and Dr Solomon will try to give an idea of what can be realistically achieved with rhinoplasty surgery. Prior to the rhinoplasty a second consultation will take place. This is considered a planning session. At the planning session photographs will be taken and then advanced computer imaging will be used to estimate what can be achieved with the rhinoplasty surgery. Computer imaging is not perfect but tends to give a good idea in most cases as to what the rhinoplasty surgery can realistically achieve.

Rhinoplasty Surgery and Recovery

Rhinoplasty surgery generally will take between one and two hours. The surgery is typically done with general anesthesia. Patients will stay in one of our Toronto hospital facilities for a few hours after surgery until ready for discharge. The recovery from rhinoplasty is variable but typically most swelling subsides in 7-10 days. The splint is typically removed from the nose a week after surgery. At this time the nose will not be its final shape. The nose will take an additional few weeks to look good. The nose will take about a year for complete healing. Dr Solomon will see each patient every few months after surgery for about a year.

Rhinoplasty Revisions

Up to ten percent of rhinoplasty patients may develop some miner imperfections of their nose while healing. These imperfections typically are small bumps along the nasal bridge where the nose has been altered. Often imperfections from rhinoplasty surgery can resolve on their own without treatment. At one year following rhinoplasty surgery Dr Solomon will assess your nose to see the final result. If any further improvement is believed to be possible Dr Solomon will offer options to improve the result. Some patients may need revision rhinoplasty surgery done by Dr Solomon. Generally revisions for Dr Solomon’s initial surgery are miner and will not have additional fees. The rhinoplasty surgery experience is generally a very positive experience for most patients. Dr Solomon’s ultimate goal is to achieve an excellent rhinoplasty result and a happy patient. In the rare situation that a patient will need a more extensive revision procedure Dr Solomon will provide all options available prior to the subsequent surgery.
